I've been taught how to hold a Monarch properly. It was part of the things needed for my MNR rearing/tagging permit.
I know how to feed them, too, but that's a skill I haven't had to use in practice. The holding is useful when tagging them, obviously.

My cousin used to grab butterflies by the wings and hold them for about 10 minutes. After he let go, the scales were gone leaving only clear wings.
