Icon84 Mormons to spend less time in church

And don't call us Mormons!

The article did answer a question I've long had, to wit: why the name Mormon? It does not appear in the faith's name.

I was raised Jehovah's Witness. I attended -- and I believe they still attend -- a total of 5 hours of meetings a week: a 2-hour block on Sunday, another 2 hour block one weeknight, and a one-hour block on another weeknight (Tuesdays and Thursdays when i was a kid).

It sucked.

And that didn't even include the additional time we were supposed to spend proselytizing. Ugh.

From that article:

Quote:
president Nelson in August called for an end to the use of shorthand names for the religion that have been used for generations by church members and the public.
So the Sunday requirements need to be cut from three hours to two because nobody's got the time for three; but he expects people to start saying, every time, "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints"?

Somehow I suspect that's not going to work.

If they don't use the full name, it offends Jesus and pleases the devil.

I think it's OK to refer to them as "Latter Day Saints".
GenYus: I saw that yesterday on another site. So we're all going to Hell now? Is this retroactive? I guess Trey Parker and Matt Stone are already there.

We have a sizable LDS population at our public high school. (Not really large, but enough that it's more than just one or two families). The students frequently attend an early-morning worship service for an hour before reporting for school, which begins at 7:40 AM. Not sure if this is in lieu of extended Sunday worship, or something additional.

Does it? I couldn't see anything to explain why they were called Mormons; just a paragraph about how the president had decided to ask people to stop calling them "Mormons", and a lot of sentences calling them "Mormons"...

A colleague of a friend of mine apparently lives next door to a Mormon house and had a great story involving her wireless connection and their attempts to use it (and convert her), and her spying on them, but I can't remember enough details to do it justice, and I've only met her once so I don't know how it all turned out!

DawnStorm may be referring to the fact that the choir was the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The name originally comes from the additional testaments the LDS church uses which are collected in the Book of Mormon.

ETA: It is possible the nickname for the LDS church and/or its members comes from the eponymous Mormon himself, not sure on specifically which one it is from.

A few years ago, the then new President of WSU (Washington State University, in this usage) decided that the school could no longer be called Wazzu because of its party-hearty connotations. Wazzu is a long-standing (well, at least since the 1970s) nick-name, with varying explanations of its origins.

He managed to prevent the use of the term on official merchandise during his tenure, but no one stopped calling it that, and the term reappeared on merchandise after he left.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mormon_(word)

Of note, the Church of JC of LDS has apparently been unable to procure a trademark on the Mormon name, at least in the US.

Seaboe- and then there was the time that the city of Seattle decided to name its new public transportation system the South Lake Union Trolley. They tried changing it to the South Lake Union Streetcar, but the original kinda stuck.

The real problem was their slogan espousing the frugality and simplicity of the South Lake Union Trolley, "It's cheap and easy!"

A rather lengthy explanation is here. Scroll halfway down.
