United States Biden outed Seal Team 6

Comment: Do YOU know who killed our Navy Seals.................

On the night of the Osama Bin Laden raid, Secretary of Defense Gates asked
all the people in the situation room to abstain from revealing that Seal
Team Six was the military unit responsible. Everyone agreed, understanding
the danger of revenge seekers from the Taliban and Al Qaeda.

Then on Monday, Vice President Joe Biden, in an attempt to show how much
he was in the know, revealed that it was Seal Team Six. Of course the
media then ran with it. So the Pentagon has gone to great effort to
protect Seal Team Six and their families. As of last Thursday Gates, who
is no longer Defense Secretary, stated that they had implemented very
advanced security measures.

As to what happened in Afghanistan , apparently Al Qaeda fed false
information to the US that a high value target would be at a precise
location on Friday. So naturally, the military sent in Seal Team Six to
get them. It was all a set-up and heavily armed Al Qaeda and Taliban were
waiting for them and we know the results.

This is not the first time that a politician has caused the deaths of
American Servicemen, but it is one of the most egregious. I guess Panetta,
the current Secretary of Defense, and Gates are furious. I think Biden
should be tried for treason, but I doubt that will happen. I just hope the
American electorate will kick these amateurs out of office.

Incidentally, all of the above is public record. Gates has made many
speeches since he left office in which he discussed the extreme danger
Seal Team Six was under since their identity was revealed by Biden.

And this is the # 2 stupid ass-hole that is supposed to be running (and
protecting) our country.

Quick Google search shows a number of right-wing sites repeating this oen. Curiously, MediaMatters reports on the fact that Michael Savage and others are circulating the story -- but doesn't actually refute it. (Or confirm it, for that matter.)

The method that Al Qaeda supposedly used to create a trap for "Seal Team 6" would have apparently worked whether they knew the name of the team or not, though. According to the OP,

Even if it were true, all it's saying is that Al Qaeda laid a trap by feeding info that there was a high level target, and then hoping that the same team that went after Bin Laden would be sent into the trap. There's nothing that relies on them knowing it was "Seal Team 6". The same trap could be laid regardless of what the name of the team that went after Bin Laden was, or whether it had been given out.

There's this, but Gates doesn't come off sounding "mad" about it:

The article also says it was first "publicly confirmed" by Joe Biden and Leon Panetta that SEAL Team 6 was used. Which sounds as though it had already been leaked off the record, by who-the-heck-knows.

For some reason when it was Karl Rove talking to Bob Novak this kind of thing was ignored and even hailed, even though it was arguably more dangerous to people in the field and allegedly done in secret as a political action against an agent's family.

My thoughts exactly.

Either way, chances are that those guys are going to get rich by writing books, selling interviews, selling movie rights and so on anyway, so it would get public anyway.

The unit is so secret that the military does not openly acknowledge its existence, but its reputation has taken on near mythic proportions and features in books, films and video games.
Does Seal Team 6 even actually exist or is it just a cover name used to deflect the spotlight from other Cov ops groups performing the actual missions?
With it's "fame" from the movies, books and games, I doubt it was anyone in the Gov't that first gave the credit to Seal Team 6 for the operation in the public forum

When they announced that bin Laden was killed by a team of U.S. Special Operations troops, I immediately assumed it was either SEAL Team Six or Delta Force. Who the heck else would it be?

Pretty much anyone who has played a military video game or watched an action movie in the past 20 years probably made the same assumption.

And even if they didn't get the same team that had taken Bin Laden out, they'd get an elite commando team. It's really a very stupid idea.

Supposedly, the "new" quasi-official name is something like the U.S. Naval Special Warfare Development Group, or DEV-GRU, for short. They are supposedly recruited, by invitation only, of the top 10% of SEALs assigned to "regular" SEAL teams, and even then, less than half are accepted into DEV-GRU.

The founding commander of SEAL Team Six, Commander Richard Marcinko, said he deliberately picked the misleading name "Team Six" to confuse the USSR into believing there was even more deeply classifed SEAL Teams Three, Four, and Five, because at the time there was only two SEAL teams, with one having responsiblity for the Pacific, and the other for the Atlantic.

The U.S. Army supposedly has a similar recruiting policy for Delta Force, (or supposedly, the U.S. Army Special Operations Command Combat Applications Group), where the top operators among Special Forces Alpha Teams (Green Berets) are invited to try out for slots in Delta Force.

Again, all of this is speculation on my behalf, based on what little unclassified information about those two units has been publicly released, much of it from Commander Marcinko's infamous autobiography, "Rogue Warrior."

Well, that was the mistake in the first place. Once Al Qaeda knew that bin Laden was killed by U.S. Special Operations troops, then they would be able to carry out their cunning plans to kill U.S. Special Operations troops. The White House should just have said "We hear bin Laden has been killed, but we've no idea how it happened. It could have been anybody!" Then Al Qaeda wouldn't have known who to try to kill!

Releasing the codename "SEAL Team Six" is hardly blowing anybody's cover...

The SEALs were from the same elite Navy commando unit, SEAL Team Six, that secretly entered Pakistan to kill Osama bin Laden in May, senior U.S. officials said, although the rescue mission in Somalia was carried out by a different assault team within the unit.
SEAL Team 6 seems to be bigger than a few soldiers - or shouldn't I disclose that?
