Default Touching a windscreen prevents stone damage

There's a long held belief that putting your finger on the inside of your windscreen when passing cars on a gravel road will prevent damage to the screen by absorbing the shock of any stones hitting it. I've never believed this, as surely the soft rubber seal that holds the screen in place would also help.

But it would be difficult to test also. I've seen this many times in Ireland, and have heard about it in the UK as well.

Anywhere else this might be the case.

May be because you are driving slower as you reach up to touch the window (windscreen).

I had an Aussie tell me this 30 years ago. I didn't believe it then and i have never heard any evidence to support it.

Only in north America. And it doesn't work on elephants.

Why would you need to touch the windscreen to slow down.

But usually it's the passenger that does it. There's a sort of expectation of it.

When you slow down quickly enough from high enough speed, the passenger may touch the windshield despite the seat belts.

I'm trying to work out if your serious, but I'm leaning towards comedy. There's no slowing down involved.

Other than Ireland where it is very common, and the afore-mentioned Australia, (where I have never heard it), does this claim exist anywhere else.

I have heard of it on Mythbusters (where they busted it)

Though the show is produced by an Australian crew, its based in the US. Who knows how the idea got to them - I donít think they said on the show.

The slowing down refers to extreme slowing down as in hitting a tree. My comment has nothing to do with the OP. It was an attempt at humor. And I have never heard anything about the OP claim despite being around people who drive on unpaved roads quite often.
