Depending on when the choice was made, it could easily have looked like a no-brainer from the other direction to our likely reaction.
I don't think petroleum oil was considered particularly valuable until the 1800's. |

I thought it was supposed to be complementing the Irish good sense until I realised it was meant to be another "Irish stupidity" joke. Would you rather be stuck in a desert with some oil, or on a fertile island with some potatoes? The potatoes are still the obvious choice, really.
