Icon81 Sharks Do Get Cancer

Scientists have known for more than 150 years that sharks get cancer. And yet the belief persists that the animals don't suffer from the disease.

While we are at it, I read in a popular science magazine while at the dentist that naked mole rats don't get cancer.

Moreover, they've also discovered what makes them not get cancer, a genetic abnormality that made them overproduce some substance I can't remember. If this substance is reduced to normal levels, they get cancer as any other rat.

That should be useful information, if it's true.

I remember years ago hearing a marine biologist talking about the eating shark cartilage to cure cancer fad. His main points were that 1) who the hell came up with the idea that sharks didn't get cancer because it was absolutely not true and had been never reported as true by any marine biologist he'd ever heard of, and 2) even if it were true, eating shark cartilage wouldn't give you super cancer immunity any more than it would transform you into a half-shark, half-human hybrid.
