Default Rob Ford crack scandal: Time for mayor to step down: Editorial

Enough is enough. It’s time for Toronto Mayor Rob Ford to do the right thing for the city, and himself, and step down.

All day Friday, while the city absorbed the news that drug dealers have been shopping a cellphone video that appears to show Ford smoking crack cocaine about town, the mayor had every chance to refute these extraordinary allegations. Allies and critics alike on city council called on him urgently to deal with them head on.

In the end, all he had to offer were two sentences uttered in passing as he was hustled past a throng of reporters. It’s “ridiculous,” he said. It’s “the Toronto Star going after me” again. “And that’s all I have to say.”

Ah Ford you do not disappoint.

I'd have to agree with Rob Ford on this one. It's absolutely ridiculous to expect him to comment on gossip.

At this point in time, as far as evidence goes there is no video. There is no evidence of him doing cocaine. There is absolutely no story whatsoever.

What bothers me more than the possibility that he was using crack cocaine is the hateful comments he is supposed to have made. If this turns out to be true it is his bigoted comments about the children he coaches and his homophobic slurs against Justin Trudeau that will be his real downfall IMO.

Sad that Ford's past behaviour has made this whole story seem at least remotely plausible to people. A similar story about David Miller or Mel Lastman or Barbara Hall (or other mayors further back than that) would have been laughed at and dismissed.

Well, maybe not Mel. At least the part about hanging out with drug dealers would seem plausible with Mel. He did think the Hell's Angels were nice guys.

Interesting point, Sooeygun. Only his staunchest supporters are dismissing this completely out of hand. Ford's reputation very much precedes him here.
