Default Peter Tork of the Monkees Dies at 77

Peter Tork, the guitarist and wise-cracking character in the 1960s teen-pop sensation the Monkees, died today at the age of 77, a rep for the group confirmed to Variety. Speaking with the Washington Post, Tork’s sister Anne Thorkelson did not specify a cause of death, although the guitarist had been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer a decade ago.

hey hey they were the Monkees
and people used to say they monkeyed around
but two of them are gone now
and we're all feeling down

RIP Mr. Tork

Nice tribute, Alarm.

Really, there's only 1 Monkee left who counts. Mike Nesmith distanced himself from them for years, even when he deigned to join them on stage.

Keep the spirit alive, Mickey!

I still count Mike. He came back. It was a complicated and contentious situation; not with the other 3 but with how the whole thing went down. Three of them were serious musicians, and were treated like hacks.
I loved them all, and I'm so sorry Peter and Davey are no longer with us.

I did like this part from this nice Washington Post remembrance. After struggling for some years with his instincts as a serious musician versus what you might think of as the 'novelty act' image of the Monkees:

Quote:
“This is not a band. It’s an entertainment operation whose function is Monkee music,” he told Britain’s Telegraph newspaper during a Monkees tour in 2016. “It took me a while to get to grips with that but what great music it turned out to be! And what a wild and wonderful trip it has taken us on!”

That was a really nice write-up. I like that they talked about how yeah, they had talent but were cast for that, and they had some issues, but they turned out ok.

Someone that I worked with, years ago, always seems to have been around what was happening in the 1960s when I was mostly just a child. He did civil rights work and saw Dr King speak. He did anti-war work and was involved with Students for A Democratic Society (SDS) as a national staffer. He did environmental work. I am used to him being a fount of wisdom and experience.

When Peter Tork died, he talked about him as his Carleton College classmate, I think my friend is the real Zelig. Not a connection I would have guessed.
RIP Peter.
