That's a good point. I don't know how they're defining "vegetarian fed", but my concern was not about the hens eating bugs.

Yes; if the chickens are not being fed chicken meal, that's a good thing (feeding meat from the same species can encourage the spread of disease); but if the diet is entirely vegetarian, then while the chickens may not be in individual cages they don't have access to the outdoors (except possibly in a fenced area on a concrete pad), as chickens if given the chance are fairly omnivorous.

ETA: "Cage-free" doesn't necessarily mean they run loose outside. It can mean that they're kept inside a barn -- possibly a barn quite crowded with other chickens -- as long as they're not in small cages within the barn.

Yes, the chicken meal is what I was concerned about. Unsafe, icky and too reminiscent of that one episode of the X-Files.

Icon24 The Science of Snobbery

Several months ago, this author sat at a classical music concert, trying to convince himself that wine is not bullshit. That may seem like a strange thought to have while listening to Beethovenís Symphony No. 7 in A major. But Priceonomics had recently posted an article investigating The Price of Wine, part of which reviewed research that cast doubt on both consumersí and wine expertsí ability to distinguish between quality wine and table wine or identify different wines and their flavors. It seemed a slippery slope to the conclusion that wine culture is nothing more than actors performing a snobbish play.
