Default Drug trafficker owns packing operation at centre of fruit tampering scandal

https://www.smh.com.au/national/drug...21-p505b8.html

For those who came in late: someone has decided, for whatever reason, that putting sewing needles into strawberries (among other fruit) was a really good idea. As a result, supermarkets have had to dump thousands of dollars worth, and anyone caught tampering with fruit now faces 15 years in prison (Yup. That prank you may want to pull will get you as much jail time as a terrorist. Also, we’re in the middle of a drought, so the brain trust here has actually crippled the farmers significantly.

Anything g-you do that has a significant chance of injury, death, or property damage is not a prank.

True, but you’re forgetting that the kind of people who usually pull this kind of thing aren’t normally concerned with consequences. To them, it’s just a prank, like…I dunno…that time the Year 10s got a hold of Muckup Day and just about ruined it for everyone (a thing that my sister once complained about*. A lot of schools here have banned Muckup Day for pretty much this reason).

*Going by a sixteen-year-old memory of something that didn’t actually affect me. I did however find this link from Wikipedia: https://web.archive.org/web/20160303...ckly-1.1007219

It seems pretty close to, say, dropping large rocks from an overpass. It may be that some people who do it aren't thinking it through, and sometimes no one will wind up being hurt, but it has the potential to cause great harm. It should not be brushed off as a "prank" by anyone.

If the 15 years is a mandatory sentence, that may be a problem if there are mitigating circumstances, but that's a general problem with mandatory sentencing.

There have been issues in the past with idiots dropping/throwing rocks from overpasses; IIRC, one girl was hit in the head so severely, she had to learn how to do basic stuff all over again. Others had accidents. I don't know how the throwers were punished once caught, but it was not a slap on the wrist.

JnP--we have lots and lots of rain if you want to come up here with a bucket or two. Have fun getting that back home!
