Days after returning from his Last Week Tonight winter hiatus, John Oliver has emerged victorious from a legal fight with the subject of one of his segments. Robert Murray, Murray Energy and other associated coal companies sued both the network and Oliver in June, arguing the host created a "villainous" portrait of the coal baron.

Not much of a surprise there.

Itís not much of a surprise, but itís a nice little victory and Iím all about celebrating victories, big and small. Though how exactly did the Coal King expect this to play out? Even if he had won against Oliver, because, well, there are some obvious flaws in his logic.

Oliver Segment: Basically says that the CEO of Murray Energy is a thinned-skinned a-hole who sues people at the drop of a hat, because he canít bear the slightest criticism.

Robert Murrayís Response: How dare he utter such slander?! Iíll show him how strong and decisive I am by suing him for criticizing me. Thatíll show him!

Even if Oliver lost, what would likely happen is a variation on the Streisand Effect or the McLibel case or in short, a Pyrrhic victory.

Sometimes the purpose of these types of lawsuits is to silence other news people or commentators who might think twice about doing a story on the same topic.

Glad to see it, but watch Murray's lawyers will sue again. Sooner or later.

The case was dismissed with prejudice. His lawyers will probably sue again, but they can't bring the same suit against John Oliver and HBO in the same court's jurisdiction.

Copyright attorney, Leonard French, goes over the letter the judge sent to one of the attorneys (I'm not sure which side) that outlines the reasoning behind the intent to dismiss. It isn't an order or an opinion, just a letter outlining the arguments.

Bob Murray isn't happy that the court dismissed his case, and even unhappier that John Oliver is all but promising it won't be the last time he has anything to say on the matter.

Murray is so unhappy, he wrote an unprompted letter to the court basically complaining, "SEE? He's still picking on me!"

Copyright attorney Leonard French gives a 'dramatic reading' of both John Oliver's comments and Murray's response--and proves he's not shy about getting a little cheeky over certain cases or individuals.
