Icon97 Illegal to sell used baby furniture

Comment: Is it really illegal to sell used baby items such as cribs, car
seats, bottles, playpens, etc? There is a lot of arguing on facebook yard
sale sites telling one another they can or can't sell these kind of items.
I only knew of drop side cribs being illegal. I thought that if the items
met guidelines and had no recalls it was perfectly legal to sell?

I know that car seats "expire" after seven years and shouldn't be used anymore. It is recommended that they be rendered useless before disposal.
But I've never heard of any sale restrictions.

It is illegal to sell items that have been recalled for safety. That includes second-hand sales such as yard sales or on Craigslist.
The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) made it illegal to sell recalled products.

As the site cited points out, it can be difficult to determine sometimes whether a particular product has been recalled once you no longer have the packaging, etc. Drop side cribs are an example that's relatively easy to determine. So I guess if you are going to sell something and you can't tell if it's been recalled then you risk breaking the law. If it hasn't been recalled, then it's not illegal.

I keep doing double-takes every time I read the topic title because it cuts off at "Illegal to sell used baby."

Some older cribs are no longer considered safe (slats are too far apart) and the CPSC might not allow them to be sold.
