Canada Bald eagle lands on Mariners pitcher James Paxton before game

The pageantry and patriotism accompanying the buildup to the Minnesota Twins' home opener forced a pause for James Paxton in his warmup routine, leaving the Seattle starting pitcher standing alone in left field while a giant flag was unfurled nearby. The bald eagle brought in for a ceremonial flight over the field was the final piece of the pregame pomp, prior to the playing of the national anthem.

That's one chill ball player.

(edit) Well the video shows him quite calm. The picture doesn't do it justice.

My initial reaction was "is he (James) all right?" because it would freak me out to have a predator that close. Now that I've seen the video, I feel better. Yes, he was chill, but he was also doing his best to keep his face away from the eagle.

Who looked confused as all heck, poor thing.

He does look confused. He’s being gentle, just looking for that forearm humans are supposed to offer.

Not only is the beak end something to worry about, but the talons too. The eagle gripping on without leathers could hurt.

Definitely. In rehabbing the talons are the dangerous end. A friend of mine who is a raptor specialist is nursing a pretty deep puncture wound in her palm from a frightened red tailed hawk that got a talon past her gloves.

It was pointed out by an ornithologist that the bird was confused and James Paxton just happened to have his arm at the appropriate position to signal "land here".

His calmness is to be commended for preventing injury both to himself and to the bird.

It may be late, but it has to be done:

"The eagles are coming! The eagles are coming!"
