Shifty Eyes The average person commits three felonies a day

Comment: I have been seeing all over the Internet that the average person
commits three felonies a day, but a cursory Google search revealed no
supporting data or research to prove such a theory. I did notice an
article in 2010 that stated that it is estimated that the average person
commits three felonies a day unwittingly, but all the articles dated
henceforth from 2013 stated it as simple fact. This may be outside the
scope of what you usually investigate, but I was wondering if you had any
insight on it. A Google search for the phrase "average person commits
three felonies a day" should direct you to the places I've seen it around
the web. I noticed it this morning on Facebook, and it is probably only a
matter of time before someone creates a meme of it that goes viral.

If someone's asking Snopes about it after seeing it on Facebook, I'd say that it's already gone viral.

Seems very unlikely to me. Unless maybe they are aggregating traffic violations or something. I could believe more than three violations per day, but I'd need a lot more evidence to believe even three misdemeanors per day.

Yeah, unless they're being loose with the definition of "commits" by including laws from other countries or things that used to be felonies but aren't anymore.

If there was any truth to it, I'd expect that there'd be a list of which felonies people are committing.

Maybe people are committing felonies such as cutting onions at a barbershop on a Sunday and the like.

Maybe swallowing a spider in your sleep is a felony somewhere...

I think the factoid originated in this book: http://www.amazon.com/Three-Felonies...9470197&sr=1-1

I was thinking about this after I posted, and guessed that it was being passed around by conservative or libertarian types who claim that regulations have run entirely amok. Steve's cite confirms it.

I consider myself an above average person so I'm sure I could pull off at least 4 or 5 felonies a day if I applied myself.

/grabs onions, heads off to barbershop

It does say average. Maybe there are a bunch of supervillains running around the place.

They're so felonious that they're able to bring the mean average up to three per person per day? They must be some real card-carrying villains who are constantly committing arson, murder, and jaywalking. And that's terrible.
