Default Several people killed in shooting at Texas high school, suspect in custody

Multiple fatalities were reported at a Texas high school on Friday after a person with a gun barged inside a classroom and fired several shots, police and law enforcement sources said.

From the story posted:

Quote:
While the drama was unfolding, a flag-toting man wearing a Make America Great cap and a pistol by his side suddenly appeared outside the school. He was immediately stopped by police.
-- did he think he was going to go in and Save the Day? with the police already there, and after taking the time to pick up his flag? (he may always carry the pistol, but I doubt he always carries a flag.)

Possibly there'll be more info on this later.

I'm sure there will be immediate condemnation from the usual suspects in the GOP about politicizing a tragedy.

OK, this is a VERY minor (actually irrelevant) point in the face of this tragedy, but it is possible that this guy drives around with a flag on the back of his truck.

Still, yes, if he thought he was going to run in and save the day, schlepping a flag would not help his speed.

I'm thinking they weren't being literal. Toting does not necessarily mean he physically had a flag on him.

Not being argumentative, but what else can toting mean? If he was wearing a flag patch they would say "flag wearing"

I think it was a poor choice of words.

The word toting can mean conveyance of an idea. If he was waving a flag or carrying a flag in his hand or had one flying out of his back pocket why didn't they say that?

It seems to me like the writer really wanted to get a point across about the man. The gun was at his side, the hat was on his head, why didn't they describe where the flag was too?

And then there's the person who apparently, according to that second story, called to have the first one arrested, and is quoted as saying

Quote:
‘But this idiot is walking down here and he needs to make america great again.

‘That’s not what america needs, we don’t need this crap…we need prayers.
It's entirely correct that we don't need that crap. But we need a whole lot more than prayers.

You want to pray while you're doing something about it, fine by me. You want to claim we can fix this by praying, seems to me the evidence shows otherwise.

If it's alright with you, I'm gonna go into the corner, lay down and completely give up. Given that these things happen on such a regular basis now, and nothing ever gets done, why the hell should I even think anything ever will from this point on? Clearly, people learn nothing.

"Of course we'll discuss this freely and openly!"

Speaking at a press conference Friday, Sen. Ted Cruz said more would be learned about the suspect in coming days and "what red flags, what warning signs there may have been or may not have been."

"I'm sure we'll have a robust conversation about what more could have been done to prevent this horrible tragedy," Cruz said.

There's a Texas politician who's just proposed that the real problem is that schools have too many doors.

I'd post a link, but I saw it via a blog posting from MSNBC commentator Chris Hayes's Twitter account and I'm not sure how to post that. I'm sure it will be on his show tonight.

.

Won't fire codes dictate a minimum number of doors, if for nothing else, fire exits. Yes, I understand emergency exits don't have to be open from the outside.

Also, consider the student enrollment at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL was over 3000.

That school would have an interesting situation if all 3000 students have to enter through entry.

Given that it's noting but yet another "let's blame anything but guns" argument, I don't think that really matters to him.

Also, I'm pretty sure that having only one door would create some easy new ways to manage mass shootings (set a fire at the opposite end of the building, then wait at the door). And if the shooter were indoors, having only one door would make it harder to escape.

But when you're 1) an idiot and 2) desperately trying to come up with something that doesn't involve pissing off the NRA, but makes you look like you care if children die, you don't think these things through so well.
