What does the President of the NRA do, except give speeches? Everything is being run by LaPierre.

When I initially saw the photo I thought it was President Bush the Younger.

Holy crap. I thought this was a joke. How in God's name can they expect this to improve their image?

To be realistic, absent a complete reversal of their major political stance*, is there anything the NRA could do to improve their image with people that are against them?

With the people that are for them, this will probably improve their image. For some reason, Oliver North seems to have turned into this folk hero for standing up to "the man" and "doing what is right". So he'll be seen as the perfect person to fight against the "deep state" that is so hell-bent on taking away every American's penis guns.

* Maximize gun sales no matter what

Default Oliver North: Trump should sanction anyone who does business with Iran

http://thehill.com/policy/internatio...ness-with-iran

Oliver North, who was once at the center of a controversy in which he sold weapons to Tehran to fund a rebel group in Nicaragua, said on Tuesday that President Trump should sanction anyone who does business with Iran, Fox News reported.

So the head of the NRA will be an individual that, for a time, was legally prohibited from owning a gun. And, as many on the right would normally say, got out of a felony conviction on a technicality.

No, no, no. He's white and rich, so it was totally legit for him to beat that conviction.

Well, for a while the President of the NRA was unable to own a firearm.

While Heston was president of the NRA, he developed Alzheimers, which would make him ineligible to own a gun in many locations.

I hadn't thought of this before.

Were Heston's guns ever actually taken away from him? Was he definitely diagnosed while still president?

AFAIK, his guns were not taken away.

Certainly at the time, Alzheimer's could not be confirmed without a brain tissue sample, so people were said to show symptoms of Alzheimer's.

I remember when it came out that there were a lot of pundits joking about the President of the NRA being unable to own guns.

Tantrum

Whenever I see a FB rant from one of my more conservative friends complaining that Hollywood stars should just make movies, and keep their political opinions to themselves, I post a copy of Heston at the NRA meeting hoisting a rifle over his head, and ask "Do you mean this Hollywood star too???"

That usually means a pretty quick end to that thread.

You could mix it up with pictures of Arnold, Jessie Ventura, and Reagan, too.

When I say that to the conservative I know they often just lie or fool themselves or whatever: "It was wrong when they did it too." or "I don't like them either." or "Reagan wasn't part of Hollywood by that time..." or any number of other excuses. Someone was criticising Michelle Wolf's whcd monologue. (It turned out they hadn't even listened or read it of course.) So I was laughing about how the wh admin itself has said far worse things (and she's a comedian who actually was asked to do this, not the leaders of a free country having petulant fits on Twitter) and they were like "I don't like that either" even though for some reason they never complained before. It's just impossible to talk sensibly about these issues any more. We are way further into the looking glass than I thought we'd ever be in my own lifetime. Why I thought it wouldn't happen in the US, I don't know. Rather foolish of me.

North is starting out well.

Quote:
They call them activists. That’s what they’re calling themselves. They’re not activists — this is civil terrorism. This is the kind of thing that’s never been seen against a civil rights organization in America. You go back to the terrible days of Jim Crow and those kinds of things — even there you didn’t have this kind of thing. We didn’t have the cyberwar kind of thing that we’ve got today.
For context, the unprecedented things he is referring to is the home of an NRA lobbyist being sprayed with fake blood. While that is a completely unacceptable action, I believe having one's home being targetted by threatening displays may have happened once or twice before.

It's definitely worse than getting shot to death because you went to school or the movies or church one day.
