The article doesn't, I think, specify a time line, though it seems to suggest that they weren't asked to stay until their replacements are confirmed. If that's true, it would be unusual, but otherwise this is exactly what one would expect with a change of political parties--and even to a lesser extent with a change in same party administration (though I would expect it to happen later in that case, and with fewer than all of the positions, unless the presidents involved had drastically different policies).

Many more than just the Cabinet posts are political appointments. Most of the replacements will probably also be career civil servants, but the administration will pick ones that they think will best align with their policies, and/or best be able to carry out those policies.

So, this is bad news in that these were probably good people who were doing good work, and their replacements may be much less good people, who are willing or even enthused about doing potentially terrible things. But at the same time, the acceptance of the resignations is exactly what any other Republican president would have done.
