40 miles north of me. It appears that everyone is mostly ok, which is good, but that's a bad, bad thing.

I-5 is really the only artery for most of the north-south traffic on the west coast, a major collapse like this is not good at all.

Thankfully no one was killed.

I wonder how long until the conspiracy angle is exploited. False flag? Terrorism? Obama expanding government? Take away guns? Orly Taitz finding that one engineer for the bridge had been to Kenya? Wesboro Baptist Church going to picket the rebuilding?

Given other bridge collapses that have had people killed, I'm just glad that I can make light of it without pangs of guilt.

My recent favorite is "Sequester Punishment" by Obama.

Any conspiracy theory is going to be interesting, because it's going to have to involve the trucker.

This is a picture of the truck they think triggered the collapse.

I was listening to a report about this this morning. They were talking about jet skies zipping around and someone handing out candles for "those who didn't make it", but everyone survived with minor injuries. It was a rather surreal report.

Of course I had to hear about this last night right before driving over a different 1-5 bridge (one that, given it's height, probably would not have yielded many survivors).

The Fremont Bridge is not a freeway bridge. Are you talking about the Aurora Bridge (also not a freeway, but Highway 99)?

As far as conspiracy theories, one I've seen so far is that WSDOT is shifting blame to the truck driver to divert attention from their responsibility to replace the bridge, or at least make repairs to ensure it was safe.

This is the best article on the incident I've seen so far:

Now that you mention it I actually think there is... I remember once Googling for pictures of the Fremont Bridge in Seattle and getting hits for one in Oregon as well.

ETA: Yup, there's a Fremont Bridge on I-5 in Portland.

ETA2: Oops, I read that Wikipedia article too quickly. It's on 405 near where it intersects with I-5.

I was living in Portland when they raised the Fremont Bridge into position over the Willamette River. It sure looked like a freeway to me!

The Fremont Bridge in Seattle isn't what I'd call "frightening" but it's the one most familiar to me.

The Seattle I-5 bridge that meets Mickey's criteria would be (IMO), the Ship Canal bridge. It's high, it's partly over land & partly over water, it's a double-decker and it's (almost) over another bridge.

Actually, I had the Fremont confused with the Marquam Bridge: that's the one that scares the hell out of me. The lanes are narrow, it's freaking high, and there's always heavy traffic.

Try this bridge sometime:
Mackinac Bridge
A Yugo once blew off in high winds and one lane in each direction is 'paved' with metal grates. You can see right down to the water.

The (Portland) Fremont Bridge scares me, but I didn't know the name of it. I'm especially bothered by the flags on top, thinking about the lucky person who gets to raise and lower them.
