I was in this same boat.

As a few of you have mentioned, I also wasn't comfortable with random people being nice to me, until I guess some time in 8th grade/high school. Prior to that I always felt a paranoia about letting my guard down, like they'd whirl around and snicker with friends if I gave any sort of genuine response.

It made forming friendships very difficult. This is probably the main reason I avoided organized sports, girl scouts, etc. I didn't feel like voluntarily spending time around people who I was certain couldn't stand me and would ignore me if given the chance, and if they were nice to me, it must have just been out of some sense of inner goodness rather than actually liking me or wanting to be friends.

I realize in retrospect that it wasn't really like that, but that's how I came to understand the world pretty early in elementary school.

"I want to expose that coward so bad. Where ever he goes I want people to recognize him and say that's one of the cowards of Broward. I want people to call you Deputy Runaway. I want children laughing outside your door, ‘cause they’ve found the house of Deputy Runaway."

It might feel justified, but the only thing I can say in response to the statement about the deputy is to quote Deadpool "It's so dark! Are we in the DCU?"
