Blow Your Top Snapping turtles

Comment: A long time ago when I was a child, my father told me to never
touch snapping turtles because they wouldn't let go until it thundered. I
never did touch one. I want to know if it's true that snapping turtles
wouldn't let go until it thundered. My opinion is, my father had an idea
they were covered in nasty diseases or salmonella or fungi and simply
didn't want his children to get sick or scaly.

Well, that and the fact that they can take a chunk out of your flesh...

This is an old folk belief. There's nothing in it, really. A snapping turtle will let go as soon as he has swallowed enough flesh to satisfy his inhuman reptilian cravings.

"Until it thunders" is just slang for "until he's good and ready."

When I was young, my papa told me that a rattlesnake would continue writhing, even after you'd cut its head off, "until sundown." Later, he admitted that this was nonsense, and it really only meant "for a while yet."

Growing up we had a pet snapping turtle for a while. If you wiggled a stick infront of him/her [??] it would clamp down on it and not let go until shortly after you left it alone . Probably when it no longer felt threatened . Never seemed to have anything to do with thunder .

I always heard they stayed clamped until the sun went down.
