I was watching a documentary about a case in Scotland. The guy was convinced they were extra-terrestrial lights because they seemed to hover. Turns out he is under the approach to a major airport and he was seeing the aircraft headlamps coming directly towards him which made the light appear to hover. The first time you see aircraft headlamps it is a bit weird - you think of headlamps as being for cars, not planes (after they have runway lights, right?).

Some "coloured lights in the sky" caused lots of oldsters in a block of flats to phone the radio about "spaceships". The lights were spotlights from a disco in town that shines them into the sky to make patterns.

99.9% of UFO sightings are explainable. That's what makes the 0.1% really interesting.

The trouble is 99.9% of witnesses think they've seen that 0.1% !

And here you have the essential difference in the way people think: to me, that makes the other 0.1% quite un-interesting!
