Been following this for a while. They're saying there believed to be about 30 people inside the store. A few have managed to escape or have been released.

Looks like (maybe) a peaceful ending. Suspect came out already handcuffed, with 4 hostages. Suspect taken into custody and put in an ambulance (he appeared to have a minor injury).

Not a happy ending for everybody, though. There was at least one fatality.

-- it sounds rather like he was in Trader Joe's purely by accident, trying to get away from the police after shooting a couple of family members (whose condition doesn't seem clear yet.)

Yes, the mention of the fatality came a bit later. I too have wondered at the condition of the two people he shot (including his grandmother) prior to the chase. Still, it could have been much worse. At least he didn't decide to die and take more people with him.

Questions swirl over LAPD shootout with gunman that left a Trader Joe's store manager dead

Short notes: The one fatality was one of the store managers. The suspect's grandmother is in stable condition and expected to survive. There were other minor injuries.

The "questions" have to do with the police apparently firing at the suspect as he ran into the store, in a busy area (it is even possible the manager was killed by a bullet from police, rather than one from the suspect -- though either way, he can be and is being charged with murder). The alternative, on the other hand, would be to let a known armed-and-dangerous suspect run into a presumably crowded store without trying to stop him. No real good choices for the police at that point.

I usually lean towards the "don't shoot" side of things when use of force is questioned. But in this case, I think the officers made the right decision* to return fire. He took multiple shots at the police both while he was driving away and while he was running into the store. It is very likely that he would have continued to return fire and/or have deliberately shot at the people inside the store. The police probably didn't know that at the time, but he accidentally shot his girlfriend in the head** while he was shooting at police during his flight. That's the kind of accidental shooting that can occur when someone is indiscriminately firing in a crowd. Basically it comes down to a kind of tough logic situation. How many shots will the suspect continue to fire if he is not stopped vs how many total shots will be fired if the police also fire and can stop him? If the latter number is the lower number, then the law of averages would say that shooting at the suspect is the least dangerous option. Of course, that leaves out the fact that the criminal may very well deliberately shoot people inside the store.

* Based on the information we have now of course.
** She was grazed in the head which means a tiny alteration in bullet path could have resulted in a much more serious if not fatal shooting.

Yes when I first heard the news there were no fatalities. It was with great sorrow that I heard of the one fatality.
