That's sort of like replying to "you can't copyright a natural material" by saying "but this painting is made of nothing but natural materials!" It's not the materials, nor the numbers themselves that are copyrighted. It's their collection in a format that is interpreted by machines and brains as created content. The numbers are just a medium.

By the way, as was discussed on this board before, you can trademark a number.

"Information alone without a minimum of original creativity cannot be protected by copyright." --Feist Publications, Inc., vs. Rural Telephone Service Co., 499 U.S. 340 (1991), Feist copied the Rural Telephone Service phone directory and presented it in a different manner. Rural sued and lost. Basically, you cannot copyright a list.

Interesting side point. Rural knew it was from their directory because they had a few "bogus" entries as copyright traps.

I like the way you think Troberg. Let me know when you publish "The List of Clever Words"

I notice the book, "A Million Random Digits (etc)" is now available free. I often wondered if it had a copyright.

OK, I know that wasn't meant seriously, but I was surprised see that the book is free. And it looks like the book is under copyright:
The rights have since reverted to RAND. . .
