I was just watching old Mitchell and Webb Look episodes, and there's a good joke in one sketch where David Mitchell refers to "countries like Australia, such as New Zealand... and Australia".

John Oliver just did a bit about Australia and New Zealand, and ended it with how much they hate being lumped into one culture.

Well the "countries like the USA, such as Canada" joke works just as well there I'd say.

Argh, we wear Boardies to the beach, unless we're Tony Abbott, or a lifesaver, or a nudist.

Yeah, Thongs meaning FlipFlops will never make sense, nor that a Ging was a Thong to the son of a ten pound Pom.

Isn't the big difference between Australia and New Zealand the lack of things that will kill you in New Zealand?

Other than orcs, trolls, Uruk-hai, unfriendly elves, Balrog, Ring Riders, and Shelob you mean?

But you have to admit that "budgie smugglers" is a hilarious term...

Is the Australia/New Zealand dynamic mutual or one-sided? That's not a rhetorical question, I have some idea of how New Zealanders feel about Australia, but not much about how Australians feel about New Zealand.

I think Canada, being the less populous neighbor, does have some sensitivity about being considered just an extension of the US.

In the past I would have said that the US has little problem being lumped in with Canada as similar North American countries. However, with how divided things are, that's not true. 65% of the country likes Canada, while the other 35% sees them as a cautionary case study in the dystopian nightmare of totalitarian communist medical rationing and wealth redistribution.

I recently took Mrs Biggles to New Zealand for the first time. She really enjoyed getting out and about in nature without worrying about things that could bite.

We've had quite a lot of snake activity this year, and we have a couple of very large crocs hanging around too.

"Thongs" used to mean flip-flops in the US. Did up until the late 80s or early 90s, I think.

I don't know a lot of women who wear boardies to the beach.
