I am so glad we dropped TLC from our cable package. There were one or two shows I occasionally watched (and I can't remember what they were now), but nothing was tolerable enough to justify paying for Honey Boo Boo, Toddlers and Tiaras and a bunch of Duggers.

Sigh. And I remember when that used to be my favourite channel.

I know right? Remember when they had Learning stuff on? Remember, "Great Books," and I don't remember the name now, but it was a show teachers could record and use freely for a period of time? Some of those shows were really good. Now it's all crap. I wish I could drop it, but I'd have to drop other programming I still want (and some DH still wants, but that's another story )

I don't know what the "Guy Code" show is all about, but the commercials for it are disgusting.

And while I was watching Boy Meets World, they played the commercial for it every break.

Liss over at shakesville has encapsulated just why this commercial drives me totally batty...

I mean, the whole "everything you see on the internets must be true" idea is funny. But I absolutely loathe the way they go about it.

Heavt breathing

I hate any ad--usually radio ads--that depict someone as being so incredibly busy that she (it's usually a woman) doesn't even have time to breathe. [f'rinstance: gottagetthekidsupfeedthedogdotheshoppingpickupthed rycleaninggotowork....]
Listen, we're all busy, we're just not drama queens about it.

I dislike that commercial too, but I don't really agree with the shakesville opinion. I think it's sexist and stupid, but I think that the idea is that "Mike" knows this woman well and knows that trying to "save" her is beyond his abilities. She is, after all, an adult. As far as the "smirk" I thought the look she gives Mike before walking away was the only vaguely amusing part of the commercial. And the Dude doesn't really seem to be smirking at Mike.

In other words, I get the impression that she and Mike have had the internet discussion before and he hasn't gotten far. She's a grown up and can make her own decisions as far as companionship. Just 'cause they're going on a date doesn't mean that sex will occur either coerced or forced. Yeah, the dude lied and hopefully she'll catch on, but it is her call to make. Mike is not obligated to save a grown woman and if he chooses not to try it doesn't mean bros before hos.

There's a new Walgreen's ad in which a couple is sitting at a table having breakfast. The woman is eying the man with annoyance as he eats a doughnut. Suddenly she loses control and grabs the doughnut from him and crumbles it to tiny crumbs.

No, just not right to be so controlling.

There's an ad for Rosetta Stone software I kept hearing on Pandora a lot today: Man calls their operator to order their free demo software and asks "What's the catch?" to which she replies "There's no catch. We're so sure Rosetta Stone is the best way to learn a new language we'll send you a free demo."

Well that's the catch right there -- it's just a demo version! I'm sure once the demo period is over you have to pay if you want to keep using it. That's what software companies have been doing with demo software for decades now.

There's a radio ad for Vehicles for Change. The ad talks about how g-you can really help someone out by donating your unwanted car to a needy family. Then there's the line: ...your vehicle may already be on the road with a proud mom behind the wheel....What, fathers don't drive their kids anywhere?
Sexist much, people?

When people hear "needy family" they think "single mom".

Sadly, there's a reason for that.

I only dislike this one a little, but part of it's making me nuts. I just saw an ad for Fiber One fudge bars (or something closely related) where the husband acts like a cop, accusing his wife of fraud because she tried to pass them off as either a real snack or homemade. It was followed immediately by an ad where a guy tells a different woman that a product from the same line is what she desires. What's making me nuts is that I know I've seen the woman from the first ad in another ad, but I can't even remember whether it's for the same company.

The "guyet" ad. I hate the concept of "exactly the same, but with a manly name so it's okay for men to use".

There's an advertisement with what I'm assuming is supposed to be a "cute" family. The father says that the great deal at (whatever) gets him an appetizer, an entree, and a desert and declares it a "square meal". The little girl says that with three things it should be a "triangle meal". It's the way the kid says it, and how the father instantly gets totally flustered that drives me nuts. "No, sweetie, a 'square meal' is an expression people use" is all he had to say. Instead he fumbles, acts embarrassed, and goes on to say it's a "well rounded meal", at which point the son chimes in with the same know-it-all attitude his sister had to say "Then it should be a circular meal." If the kids sounded like they were joking it might even be as cute, but with the kids' attitude at the dad's floundering it just comes off as ... uncomfortable.

TV

I haven't seen the ad, but the way you described it makes me think of DD1 (age 5) - it sounds like something she would say. It can be crazy-making, but it's also a little funny (my grandma likes to say that talking to DD1 is like going back in time to talk to me).

I like that commercial only because I love that woman to bits! She's hilarious and adorable and awesome. She's been in a lot of ads (especially recently). A doggy snack commercial, a Progressive commercial with Flo (the one where her old insurance guys keep getting her name wrong), and she was the spelling teacher in the Target back to school ads.

Don't judge me - there's nothing to do around here, and I watch a lot of TV. What of it?

I miss culture...

I feel the same way about her. She always does an excellent job on her commercials.
One of two reasons I actually like the Walgreens commercial is because of the actress (who was in Leverage for a couple of episodes).

On a different note, has anyone else seen the Subaru commercials with the dogs driving the car to go skiing or camping? I'm not sure if they are a locally produced set of commercials or nationally. If they aren't national will try to dig them up online to post on here. They are very cute and funny, especially the one where they are camping and the wolf howl sends them all running to car and locking the doors.

I knew she'd been in an ad with a dog. That's one I was thinking of.

This is weird ... I've seen that commercial, but it ended after that line. There was no creepy guy at the end.

I'd like to imagine they cut it for content, but of course that's not the case...
