Flame Firefighters warn: "Please don't use a blowtorch to kill spiders"

Authorities say a man apparently set a California home on fire while using a blowtorch to kill spiders.

KFSN-TV reports 29 firefighters were called to a Fresno housing development Tuesday night to put out a two-alarm blaze.

Of course you shouldn't use a blowtorch, you might miss some and just piss them off.

Flamethrower, that's the way to do.

Odds are the spiders are out there, now having learned the power of fire...and looking for revenge.

Is that the pitch line for Arachnophobia 2?

I swear we've discussed this before, or if not here perhaps heard about it on "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me", except the story is from today. Was there some previous incident relatively recently where someone burned down their house attempting to use fire to kill spiders?

It's not the first time I've started this sort of incident as a topic, but it didn't come up in an admittedly not terribly comprehensive search.

How bad is it when we need to have a standing thread for people trying to kill tiny creepy crawlies with fire and setting fire to structures?

And to think: That was one thing the Doctor did NOT consider in the latest episode "Arachnids in the UK."

Of course, the smallest of those spiders was the size of a common house cat.

And the largest was (as described in the show) "the size of a small van."

I think blowtorches would probably be a reasonable method to kill those spiders.

I was re-watching an episode of Futurama last night -- "The Inhuman Torch" to be specific -- and heard Fry say, in a (false) confession of setting the Planet Express building on fire, "I guess a blowtorch is no way to exterminate rats."

Guess this guy didn't listen.
