Comment: I have been to Romania several times and have been told some
rather interesting things. One thing I heard while there was that if a woman walked on a cold bare floor (like concrete) barefoot, it would kill her ovaries. Have you ever heard of superstitions like this? They also have ideas that if a person sits in a draft like an open window (even in the summer) particularly if one's hair is damp, that it could make a person sick with a cold. |

Well, the damp hair causing colds one is pretty widespread, but I've never heard about cold floors and infertility before. But really, where do people get these ideas? Cold floors kill a woman's ovaries? Seriously, nobody who repeated that ever knew a woman who accidentally walked barefoot across a floor before getting pregnant?

If this old wives' tale were true, I would be infertile. I don't like wearing shoes or socks, so I'm often walking on cold surfaces. To be honest, I wouldn't mind being infertile, but that's aside from the point.

If cold floors made women infertile, the human race would've died out long ago.

My Russian co-worker told me her Dr in Russia said not to sit on cold ground, because it would cause infertility. And then of course, there are people that think drinking cold water is unhealthy. Not sure how they think the human race is still around.
And if the wet hair thing were true, I would be a lot sicker, a lot more often. |

I wonder if this goes back to medieval humoral theory. I did a project on medieval infertility cures and a lot of them involve herbs and foods considered warm.
This thought might also be related to thyroid problems. Someone who is hypothyroid would have a lower average body temperature and be infertile. Of course, the ambient temperature would do nothing to change this. |
