Well, I have heard some people liken Windows to a virus.

MacAfee did pretty much the same thing a few years ago. I arrived at work one day and everyone was in a panic, saying "Don't log on to your computer, there's a virus on the network!" There wasn't. What actually happened was that when they logged on MacAfee automatically downloaded an update, which caused it to falsely detect a virus, which broke Windows. As you can imagine it was a huge mess.

Yet it's never been nearly as viral or maleficent as antivirus software. Why do people still install this stuff?

Still not as bad as when a Norton update caused it to detect itself as a virus.

I use Webroot at home, but haven't opened any Windows software, aside from the OS recently. Still funny though.

Depends on your definition of "bad". Maybe it was a sillier screw up on Norton's part, but MacAfee's and the OP's mistakes made peoples' computers unusable, which I would say is worse.
