I can't imagine telling 1980's me that Jesse Ventura and Arnold Schwarzenegger were governors, Trump was president, and Bill Cosby was convicted of drugging and molesting women (and probably guilty of doing it to a lot more.)

I don't know about other states, but here, it's pretty unheard of to not start serving a sentence immediately, regardless of an appeal. I suspect it's pretty rare elsewhere, too.

Purely a question on my part - how is he considered 'violent'? Is it because he drugged the victim?

I think that is just the term for the more egregious sexual offenses. Pennsyvania law has three tiers of sexual offenses that qualify one as a violent sexual offender. Things like indecent exposure don't appear to be on the list. Cosby was probably convicted under 3121 (a)(4) which is a Tier III offense. Tier III appears to be the worst as multiple convictions for Tier I or II count as a Tier III offense.

§ 3121. Rape.

(a) Offense defined.--A person commits a felony of the first degree when the person engages in sexual intercourse with a complainant:
...
(4) Where the person has substantially impaired the complainant's power to appraise or control his or her conduct by administering or employing, without the knowledge of the complainant, drugs, intoxicants or other means for the purpose of preventing resistance.
