In a similar situation, I just unfollowed most of the individual members of my closed group (excepting a few I'm closer to). So the posts in the group were the only addition to my feed.

The main fb snopes group is comprised (it seems to me) primarily of people who want snopes to confirm or deny something. As opposed to us, who just want to discuss things to death among ourselves.

I've not joined the official group, and if there was an unofficial one in the past, I'm no longer a member of that either... there certainly used to be a semi-organised unofficial way of knowing who was who, though. As it is I've just got 40-odd friends on there who I know are originally from snopes but can only remember about half of you by screen name...

![]() The one major difference I see between this and the official snopes page on Facebook was the nature of the members. Anyone can join the Facebook page and immediately start posting. Here, there was a delay. I don't know if the delay prevented the trolls and jerks from staying, but it seemed to do something. Conversation here used to, and still does, go in rather informed pathways that may take several paragraphs to explain a point of view. On Facebook, it goes in the online equivalent to a run-on sentence that, as soon as one hits carriage return, it becomes the whole post. We used to see a lot of debate here. We see a lot of arguments there. It's a difference. |

Took me awhile to get around that issue on Facebook, but I found that SHIFT-ENTER will allow paragraphing without sending the post to that point.

The level of discourse on that page is not high.

Yeah, you get folks who interpret "see more" as a threat...

It's a grade above Yahoo answers in that there are sometimes thought provoking questions/answers, but 90% of the time it's an eyebrow raised WTF read. ETA: Not that I would compare it in any way to this message board, however - I've met many friends and a husband through this site's very intelligent commentary. I hadn't, but I don't generally scroll to the bottom of the page. I check the main page twice a day in an effort to avoid posting stories already covered there, so I only scroll as far as I need to when checking what's new.
