Default Will bone fragment finally solve mystery of what happened to aviator Amelia Earhart?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...ic-island.html

A tiny bone found on a tropical island could finally solve the riddle of what happened to aviator Amelia Earhart.

Researchers found the fragment - which is believed to come from a finger - alongside pieces of a pocket knife, pre-war American bottles and makeup from a woman's compact.

The remains of small fires as well as bird and fish bones and empty oyster shells laid in rows as if to catch water were also recovered.

I actually watched the documentary about this group the other night. It was quite interesting, and they have managed to amass quite a bit of evidence that might suggest their theory is true.

however, they've yet to find anything that proves their theory.

Vanishing Amelia Earhart mystery: Expedition comes home with more questions

The fate of famed aviator Amelia Earhart remains a mystery. The latest expedition failed to find the wreckage of the plane she was flying when she went missing 75 years ago.

What they've done is decided what they think the answer is and tried to prove that. They see every little thing as "possible evidence" for their own hypothesis but there's no way to compare that to others which would generate just as much evidence and there are very reasonable theories (for example, the one in which she and Noonan ditched in the sea and never were on land) that would generate almost no evidence. I think at this point they're just confirming their own bias.

This just in... Amelia Earhart is still dead.

(sorry, channeling a very very very old SNL gag.)

Greetings, Snopesters!

Longtime reader, first time poster..

Anyway, to the topic at hand. Gillespie and his group "TIGHAR" have long been a joke in the aviation history community. The name is an acronym for "The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery" and yet in some 25 years of existence they have yet to recover a single aircraft (historic or otherwise.) They've made half-hearted attempts to get involved in some high profile (among vintage airplane geeks anyway) cases, but always run out of steam before taking any real action.

Gillespie has made a career out of raising funds for his Earhart "expeditions," but they all turn out the same "we've found some tantalizing 'evidence' but to get real proof we need more money for another expedition."

As for his latest blurry photos of coral encrusted rocks, they're about as convincing as the "Mars Face."

Icon102 Amelia Earhart's plane found? Sonar images may have pinpointed wreckage

A grainy sonar image captured off an uninhabited tropical island in the southwestern Pacific republic of Kiribati might represent the remains of the Electra, the two-engine aircraft legendary aviator Amelia Earhart was piloting when she vanished on July 2, 1937 in a record attempt to fly around the world at the equator.

Roll eyes

Oh, boy. Here we go again. Every little smudge on every photo, every piece of garbage that might have been used by a woman in the 1930's, every story of bones or wrecks or tall people on an island -and now, every shadow on a sonar scan - is evidence. Amazingly all of it found on one island! (Oh, by the way, it happens to be the only island they're bothering to look at.)

Oh, Ganzfeld2007, how naive you are.

The image I saw wasn't just blurry, it was pixellated -- could have been a problem on my end, of course.

Pretty island.

I'm just waiting for the moment when two unsolved mysteries converge and some jackass claims that Amelia Earhart was also Jack the Ripper.

Foolish Mateus; The Cleveland Torso Murderer is a much more likely alter ego for Amelia!
