Are North American governments secretly conspiring to build a "NAFTA superhighway," four football fields wide, from Mexico to Canada to bypass regulatory controls and whisk goods swiftly to market?
If you believe some right-wing websites in the United States, it's all but a fait accompli. They insist a gargantuan project is in the works that will carve a 365-metre-wide swath through the continent's heart, with 10 traffic lanes, rail lines for freight and passenger trains, fibre-optic cable lines and pipelines carrying oil, gas and water. http://www.canada.com/ottawacitizen/...1-0c93f24478b9 |

DH is convinced this is being built, however, he can not provide a cite that wasn't written by someone wearing a tin-foil hat.

Has anyone living along the proposed route of this superhighway seen any evidence of it's construction? Surveyors, land purchase, increased hiring of highway consruction workers? No? Thought not.

for the most part, doesn't this already exist? Granted, it's no ten lane superhighway (and i can't see why you would need that many lanes) but the pan-american highway already runs from Alaska to Chile.
With NAFTA in place, would it be that big of a deal to stop at two borders (Canada-Us and US-Mexico)? |

As RichardM said, there has been lots of press here in TX about it. Our wonderful governor awarded the construction contract to a Spanish company (who just happened to be his largest campaign contributor...hmm, think there is a correlation?).

There's also I69 which when complete will run from Canada to Mexico. Except that at the rate we're going it will run from MI to Indy, stop and pick up again in Kentucky because Indiana can't get their act together and get the road funded and built from Indy to Evansville not that I'm bitter about it at all.
In an amusing side note former 8th District Representative John Hostettler was lobbying for a more moral sounding number. Gibbie |

Actually I didn't know. D'oh. I'd wondered why I'd not remember reading it the paper. I wouldn't have been surprised though, Hostettler was a wack.
