Default Did Obama spendi $1 million in lawyer fees to hide his personal records?

I keep reading and hearing in various places in that Barrack Obama has spend over $1 million in legal fees by deploying an entire team of Justice Department lawyers (using OUR tax money) to keep his personal records & birth certificate from being released. Is this true?

Jaded

No, that rumor came from typically misleading WND articles that reported how much Barack Obama's campaign had paid in legal fees altogether and assumed (without evidence) that all the expenses were related to eligibility documentation issues.

Also, aside from federal matching funds, candidates don't have access to "our tax money".

Though the OP doesn't mention Candidate Obama. The reference to the justice department means President Obama. The justice department is most certainly funded by tax payers.

Though the truth of the that last fact hardly makes the idiotic first statement true.

It's mutating. If I recall, the name of a private law firm was attached to this at one time.

Yes, but I was jumping off snopes' reply, not the OP.

Yes. They used to point to payments to Perkins Coie, which is a pretty major law firm. Its Washington office does a lot of work for the DNC on election matters. One of its attorneys (who is now White House counsel) represented then-candidate Obama in a birther suit. WND looked up the FEC filings, found hundreds of thousands of dollars going to Perkins Coie, and of course assumed that every single dime of it (including money from before birther suits were even being filed) went to fight the suit.

Since that time, birthers have gradually exaggerated the fees to well beyond anything indicated in the FEC filings. They also just blatantly make up numbers because now that Obama is President Obama, the DOJ defends the birther suits and there is no public per-suit data on costs. In reality, all of the suits have been dismissed for lack of standing or under the political question doctrine, and it probably only took a couple of hours for AUSAs to draft the briefs. Most of them are fairly boilerplate standing arguments.
