Moments after he was convicted of sexually assaulting a teenage relative of his live-in girlfriend, an English teacher slashed his throat Wednesday with a razor in a Santa Ana courtroom, CBS Los Angeles reports.

I think most weapons screening setups are pretty useless for something as small as a razor. They might detect a large chunk of metal like a gun but have a problem with anything smaller. In addition, the people working the screening are poorly paid and are doing a mind-numbing boring job.

When I had jury duty post 9/11, the setup was pretty bad. You would give any food or drink to a guard, then pass through the metal detector. The guard would then give you your food or drink back. At least twice it was not checked at all, once with a large opaque cup and lid and once with three Chinese food boxes in a bag.

It's "nice" to know that security theater isn't limited to airports.

I suspect it is much worse in pretty much all settings compared to US airports. Most settings have less funds and AFAIK most settings don't have an ongoing testing protocol like the TSA uses at airports.

There are plenty of ceramic razor blades available, so it wouldn't really be difficult at all to get one inside a courtroom (it also wouldn't be hard to get them on a plane). You can order them on Amazon.
