Crash

Another common phenomenon is people who write to complain because we actually take the time and effort to provide background, history, context, and other illuminating information about the items we research. We get gripes like "Keep your opinions to yourselves," "Why don't you just state the facts?" or "I don't want to have to read a bunch of stuff; just tell me whether it's true or not."

Of course, we go to the lengths we do because facts are meaningless without context. Some people never learn that simple truth, though.

Comment: About that misprint on the dollar coin. Once again your liberal
bias is exposed. The answer should be both true and false. It was the
misprint that caused the confusion and the e-mails are simply still
circulating. As I have watched your comments, whenever you have the
opportunity to try and make conservative Christians look like uneducated
fools, you never miss the chance. Also, it might not have been entirely
in error, though I will give them the benefit of the doubt. More of a
concern is why it was decided to put it on the edge in the first place
since that is what will wear away first. Perhaps after looking at coins
for a number of years that the inscription is worn away, we will more
easily swallow the disposition of the inscription entirely.

One type of question we commonly receive in reference to articles marked with an "UNDETERMINED" status on our site is: "So-and-so says this is true, so why don't you have it listed as true?"

The answer is that when the only source for verifying a questionable claim is the word of someone with a vested interest in promoting a particular version of events, we do not deem that sufficient evidence to declare an item to be true.

To follow a different standard would put us in the untenable position of having to treat every claim as an exercise in proving a negative. We would have to list as true every account put forth by someone who claimed a personal connection to it and affirmed it as true, despite a lack of any other supporting evidence, unless it could absolutely be proved false. Anyone seeking to promote a political view, gain financial advantage, garner publicity, reinforce a prejudice, or further some other motive could seek to have an item vetted as "true" simply by stating it to be so.

That's why, in general, we require such accounts to be supported by additional documentation or evidence from at least one other disinterested or impartial source before listing them as true.

Comment: Dear Folks

Thank you for one of the most outstanding sites on the web. I am amazed,
on a daily basis, with the research and investigative procedures you must
go through. It's equally impressive to see your site is a non partisan,
non opinionated, informative, research tool.

Again, thank you!

Comment:
Your story is not complete about the scam from Nigeria because the man or
woman that decide to get involved in such deals is also a fraud and has
questionable character should be investigated.

Please try to give a balance story next time because your site was sited
in a class and i decided to visit in order to deduce more facts and the
authenticity of the story but i was bit disappointed because is worth
being sited in an academic work.

Please i do not need a response from you or any of your representative.

Comment: Personal note to Barbara and David Mikkelson (if possible?)

Personal question. From your comments in various articles I sense that
you have strong moral and Christian beliefs. As an evangelical myself and
having been a missionary in South America Ecuador for many years I do
appreciate your support in these matters. Please keep up the good work.

Comment: I am curious if you KNOW that your politics is obvious on your
site?

I can site multiple articles or lack of articles that proves that you are
liberal Democrat(s). No questions asked. No need to comment. Definately
Democrats.

Comment: Your site appears to be a politically motivated, liberal,
left-wing propaganda source. What gives you the authority to assert that
you are the arch experts on what is or is not true or false or to comment
on the accuracy of a quote attributed to a particular public figure or an
email currently in circulation? Sounds pretty arrogant, self-serving and
self-aggrandizing to me!

Who judges and insures your degree of accuracy and your motivation?

Your response?

I'm always amused by readers who claim that we're unreliable or politically biased, and their proof is that they've supposedly found "a whole bunch of stuff" on our site which they know to be wrong.

Of course, such readers never offer even a single example of something they've found on our site which is demonstrably in error. And if pressed to do so, the best they can ever do is cite an article that is actually correct but which they've misread, misunderstood, misinterpreted, or just plain dismissed because it doesn't conform to their own beliefs.

Add one more to the "Snopes is a right-wing flag waver" column.

By the by, what's the current score? Is "Snopes is a right-wing flag waver" in the lead, or is "Snopes is a willing tool of the Communist party" in front? Inquiring minds want to know

Besides, I've got big bucks riding on the result.

OK, I'll self-inflict

The score is always 1-1: This week it's Barbara's turn to be the right-wing flag waver, while I serve as the willing tool of the Communist party.

Why do so many readers seem to think snopes is a large organisation of people?

Of all the adjectives possible to attribute to snopes and Barbara, I would never have thought of them as being particularly arch.

Shifty Eyes

I'm always amused when readers write to complain about our supposed "bias" in expressing "opinions" as fact and offer as evidence some bit of quoted material that clearly isn't our writing at all but rather the text of an item which is being circulated on the Internet. It's hard to imagine how we could make that difference more obvious, considering that such items are plainly labeled on every page as "Examples" and set off from the main body of the page by being enclosed in a box, indented, and rendered in a font of different size and type than the rest of the article -- but still, some people just don't get it and think the examples are our own commentary.

Comment: I sent you some data on Hilary and Peter Paul and still I see
nothing on you site. Are you for real on trying to get things done or
just going to do what you feel will help your political ambitions?
