Fright Hunt is on for chainsaw attacker who wounded 5 in Swiss city

A man armed with a chainsaw wounded five people at a health insurer's office Monday in the northern Swiss city of Schaffhausen, police said, prompting a manhunt for a suspect described as aggressive and psychologically unstable.

Is it wrong that my initial reaction to this story was, "A chainsaw?! Dude has both strength and stamina?"

Yeah, it probably is, but still, a chainsaw isn't a light, easily carried weapon. It's noisy as hell and it's pretty heavy and slicing up people wouldn't make it lighter.

They're also rather unbalanced for swinging, and hitting bone is likely to cause the chain to jump. In terms of melee weapons, it's not a great choice if your goal is to actually maim or kill people.

Now, if your goal is to terrorize people, yeah, it's a really effective weapon.

Ask seasoned loggers whether they'd have to cut a bone to kill someone. A good artery or vein and the victim is a goner.

It's not a matter of needing to. It's the fact that if you're trying to use a chainsaw as a weapon, you're going to, whether you want to or not.

I've used chainsaws, and they're not something that's easy to swing around like video games tend to portray.

That's my response to pro-gun types who claim that if guns are banned criminals will just use knives or some other weapon. Ok, in an armed robbery type scenario, perhaps. But anyone who actually has the stamina to commit a mass stabbing, or a mass sawing in this case, really deserves some sort of Olympic metal.
