Japan In a Japan seemingly obsessed with sex, few seem to indulge

Japan is well known for many things, and its obsession with sex is one of them. It has one of the most robust pornographic and adult-toy industries in the world and airs TV commercials for items as banal as candy that feature sexually suggestive themes. It even has an annual fertility festival that parades two five-foot-tall penis sculptures down a busy street on a Sunday afternoon. And yet nearly half of singles in Japan have no interest in dating a situation that many experts predict will help lead to a population decline of one-third in the next 45 years. According to a survey of never-married people by the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research, 27.6 percent of single men and 22.6 percent of single women have no interest in engaging in a relationship with the opposite sex. Researchers cite those statistics to argue that a significant portion of Japanese simply has no interest in sex. They might even have an aversion to it.

27.6% of a segment and 22.6% of another segment to not add up to 50.2% of the whole.

ETA: Assuming that 49% of Japanese single people are men and 51% are women, it works out to be 25.05% of Japanese singles.

SMW: ( ( .49 x .276 ) + ( .51 * .226 ) = .2505 = 25.05%

FETA: The only way you could get to "nearly half" with those percentages is if 31% of Japanese singles did not identify as either male or female and all of those singles were not interested in dating.

Not the first time a completely unfounded stereotype turned out to be both idiotic and wrong. Who writes this kind of spit? Because people aren't hiding sexual themes they must be obsessed with it? Ugh. (This is the first time I've used this but it's so appropriate here...) The stupid - It burns. (ETA And what kind of tabloid journalist calls a country of 127 million 'it' again and again while making every thing done here a group activity that everyone is part of? Including making commercials? WTF??)

Also, some things I have read (I am not expert) is that while casual use of the internet would have you believe that Japan is an order of magnitude weirder than everywhere else, that's an extremely distorted picture, and that most of Japan is extremely mundane. Remember that the term 'otaku' which is embraced by anime fans in the US is in Japan, I am told, generally a term of derision. Judging Japan by the bits you see on the web would be like judging the U.S. based on attending a furry convention followed by an Insane Clown Posse concert. Not there there is necessarily anything wrong with either (some of my best friends are furries) but it wouldn't exactly give you an accurate picture of the nation as a whole.

So, while there are aspects to the sexual attitudes in Japanese culture that are somewhat different from ours, and in some cases perhaps a bit disturbing and misogynistic, it's not like 90% of the people in the country are sexually obsessed (at least no more than the rest of us). I mean, I did delivery work of various sorts for over twenty years and never once ran into a busty housewife or female executive who insisted on thanking me with sexual favors, which, if you only knew our culture by the porn, you might find pretty surprising....

One should also remember that the American view of Japan is based quite a bit on what things America buys from Japan.

It's not as if Japan wants to export weird stuff. Japanese companies, like all companies, would export whatever sells. People tend to accept (and remember) the stuff that matches their stereotypes. I think people buy Japanese sexual media partly because of that and partly because some of that stuff is repressed in other cultures. Not naming any names but one specific puritanical ex British Colony comes to mind.

While Puritans can't be said to have been "obsessed" with sex, they thought it was extremely important. If a man was impotent, it was one of the few reasons a woman could divorce her husband. The sexual relationship between a husband and wife was supposed to help the Puritans understand their relationship with God.

And then there was "bundling." Don't get me started on "bundling."

Not even the Puritans were "puritanical."

True. I was joking. Puritanical is the same kind of cartoonish stereotype. I doubt it really had all that much influence in the end anyway.

(Not to you Avril...)
I don't understand why this OP story is so pervasive and popular. Looking online it has come up again and again over the past few years. "Why are 'they' not interested?" (Again, in the foreign media, Japanese people aren't millions of individuals - about the populations of CA, FL, TX, NY and NJ put together - but one solid lump, ostensibly ruled by the Japanese Megamind.) Why is it such a big deal anyway? Different people have different interests.

Because anime is all weird and has tentacles and subtitles and plots that don't make sense.

Tentacles and Subtitles. I'm going to avoid the band name schtick (because of ganzfeld's law) but it would make a good book title.

Very adept Ganz. You named a band without naming a band. You're a tricksie one aren't you?

Japan

The Guardian had a similar article in October 2013. Shortly thereafter Slate published an article that was critical of The Guardian article. One of the things that Slate article points out is that the Japanese really aren't that different from American here. For example:

Quote:
It's true that marriage rates have been falling dramatically in Japan, but that's also true in the United States, where since at least 2010, a plurality of people between 25 and 34 have never been married.

Is it strange that so many unmarried Japanese people aren't in relationships or interested in being in one? Not really. A Pew survey this year, concerned mainly with online dating, began by asking Americans who are not married or living with a partner whether they are in a "committed romantic relationship." Seventy-one percent said no. Seventy-five percent of those who are not in a romantic relationship said they are currently not looking for one, numbers that are much higher than in Japan. About half of single Americans said they haven't been on a date in the last three months.

{ snip }

Yes, I'm cherry-picking numbers to make a point here, but so are these Japan articles.

{ snip }

A number of Eastern European countries have lower fertility rates than Japan, but we don't often see articles portraying Czechs and Poles as sexless nerds.
Note: Several links to the Pew Research Center in the Slate article no longer work. So, I updated them above to what I think is the correct page.
