Default Suicide Bomber Barbie

Comment: Really, this just stunned me when I saw it this morning, had to do a double take,
sit down and try to manufacture many other alternatives to what I thought I was seeing.
I haven't had little kids around for a while and I may be out of touch with what they are doing,
playing with, having pumped AT them continually through the media, so I was actually feeling
more like a 'bump on a log' about the modern kid and kinds of play and entertainment that is
happening around me. So I showed it to Neil and asked "Do you see what I think I see?" and he
was just as stunned as I. He wants to take it to school and see if anyone has anything to say.
I showed it to the new librarian at the school who lives in our building now and he was also
shocked and asked to have one himself to research and see what might be happening. We all
know about "knock offs" in Third World cultures where anything can be duplicated for almost
nothing, and where patent infringement is the norm. This certainly looks to all of us like a newer
and happier SuicideBomberBarbie is out there on this package of kids' playdough! Is there anything
else this can be? HELP! We are in shock! Who would do this and why? Do we share this with
the 'Marcan MbaC--do they care? Does Mattel Toys care? WE care! We've photographed front
and back, so you can see what we mean!!! I'll keep you posted.

Interesting, I can see outrage; there's abviously a cause; yet what exactly is she asking us to do?
BTW, I love that Barbie.

Yes. Can they control everything that anybody anywhere in the world does with their products? No.

The barbie image itself is satire:

http://www.theculture.net/barbie/

And I think it was shopped onto the box, as the barbie is in exactly the same rotation as on sample photos, and on the second photo she looks on top of film that holds the box together. Plus on the back of the box we see that the camera curves the box edge significantly, but not the image of the Barbie.

Yep, they do. They had a web site shut down because some creative person had bought a dentist Barbie and a mountain bike Barbie and rebuilt them into a gyneacologist Barbie, then photographed it and published it on their own web site.

Some people have no humor.

It doesn't even seem like Barbie comes with the Play-Doh anyway, which, I'm guessing is supposed to be plastic explosives? Not sure. Besides, unless she actually explodes, $3 seems a little pricey anyway.

Now we need a terminally ill euthanasia Barbie too!

My vote is fake.

Firstly, Play-Doh is a brand name of modeling clay. The Play-Doh brand name is not present in any of the pics. So the claim that this is Play-Doh is false.

Secondly, the package looks a bit... off. My guess is that this is either a hoax or a counterfeit. Counterfeit toys are actually quite common. My guess is that the manufacturer took a photo off the internet that looked like she had rolls of modeling clay and stuck it on the box.

ETA: I just sent Barbie an email with a link to the thread. I'll post any replies.

It looks like a picture of Barbie attached to a package of clay. The clay packaging is from an English speaking country outside of North America, based on the spelling.

Heh. I figured it was a typo but when I googled and found out there was such a thing as a hajib, I couldn't resist.

Um, no where on the box or in the OP is "Play-Doh" mentioned.

I read "playdough" as the brand name "Play-Doh." My bad. I still think it looks like a mock-up box.

BTW, one thing I noticed is the "Barbie" script on the box is NOT the actual script used by Mattel. So this is probably based on a counterfeit product to start with...

For what it's worth, I said Play-Doh in my reply. Which is maybe where you got on that train of thought?
