Icon97 Baby carseat lure

Comment: I received an email regarding the message below. Is it true?

While driving on any roads, If you see a baby carseat sitting on the side
of the road DO NOT STOP!!!! These are gangs targeting people, especially
women, to stop their vehicle to help a baby. They make this baby look as
if it has blood on itself or on its clothes, when you get out of your
vehicle in attempt to help, the gangs jump out from cornfields or tall
bushes. They have beaten women to near death, and then continue to rape
them with baseball bats and other torture methods. This is not just a
forward of information, it is within our area. If you do happen to see a
carseat DO NOT STOP CALL THE POLICE IMMEDIATELY!! Please send this onto
everyone you know.

And they do this why? Because they're really really bad?

Children of the corn perhaps?

So do these jokers only do this in areas with cornfields or lots of shrubbery? Good luck finding that in an urban area.

See, they build a duck hunting type blind out of cornstalks or shrubbery and hide inside of it. You can buy cornstalks at your local A.C. Moore or craft store, especially this time of year. It's a little known fact that violent gangs are heavily involved in arts and crafts.

Hmmm, I occassionally see (empty) car seats sitting out on the curb along with other trash on trash day. Silly me, I always thought it was because the seats were outgrown or broken. Could be something else though...

Wouldn't it have been sensible to include information about what area "our area" is, given the possibility of worldwide distribution of electronic messages?

Well, maybe not.

I think not, given that the idea is to scare the daylights out of people. Either that or the sender just has a knee-jerk reaction (OMG11!!, I must send this to all my friends!) and doesn't realize that someone on the other side of the world is reading the same message her friends down the street are.

Oh don't be so silly. The internets is only for Americans. That's why it's called America Online.

What if it's a man who stops to check on the baby? Or several people in a car? Or a police vehicle? The odds of it just being a lone woman stopping make this a pretty inefficient way of luring someone to a rape.

They don't have to go to that much effort. I think this would work.
