Jolly Roger How Detroit went broke

Here is an in depth analysis of the financial issues with Detroit:

How Detroit went broke: The answers may surprise you - and don't blame Coleman Young

Quote:
...amid a huge exodus of residents, plummeting tax revenues and skyrocketing home abandonment, Detroitís leaders engaged in a billion-dollar borrowing binge, created new taxes and failed to cut expenses when they needed to. Simultaneously, they gifted workers and retirees with generous bonuses. And under pressure from unions and, sometimes, arbitrators, they failed to cut health care benefits ó saddling the city with staggering costs that today threaten the safety and quality of life of people who live here.
In addition to point out mistakes made, the article describes many missed opportunities. While some of these date back 50 years, the debt issue is a relatively new one, growing in the 90s and then skyrocketing after 2000.

I need more coffee. I misread "And under pressure from unions" as "And under pressure from unicorns"

No, the unicorns are generous and kind, and repay the gifts given to them many fold. They are a major part of why San Jose is doing so well, as well as UAE.

The unicorns were being unreasonable asking for warmer weather and more rainbows.

I'm calling shenanigans on this. Everyone knows that unicorns poop rainbows and wouldn't be demanding them.

I though unicorns were the problem because they keep stealing the pot of gold under the rainbows.
