Take note, UFO folks. These days we get clear pictures from various angles when something actually happens.

Yeah, some of the videos are.....damn, it would scare the crap out of me if I saw that coming.....

(Though, one compilation is labelled "Urals Meteorite Shot Down by Russian Air Defense" which isn't adding to credibility...)

The timing is very interesting, since we have that close-approach asteroid cruising by today, 17000 miles up. I don't know how there could be a connection, but...

Some drivers have cameras for insurance and security.

It could very well be a small piece that fragmented semi-recently from that one. I guess we'll have to wait and see if it was from the same general direction etc.

This is clearly because of Ramzan Kadyrov's crackdown on sorcerers: a team must have messed with one who was at least level 18 and gotten Meteor Stormed.

The Bad Astromomer thinks not:

I’m trying to piece together what happened from the videos. First of all, I do not think this is related in any way to the asteroid 2102 DA14! For one thing, this occurred about 16 hours before DA14 passes. At 8 kilometers per second that’s nearly half a million kilometers away from DA14. That puts it on a totally different orbit.

A friend of mine thought that the youtube videos could be a good CGI hoax but the story has been picked up by the media with confirmations from official sources.

Compilation of several videos:

I don't understand Dr Plait's reasoning. The asteroid and the Earth are in similar orbit paths now so it could easily be along the same general line. It seems to be a huge coincidence. It could have been in a similar orbit with its parent object for many many years, plenty enough time to get a half a million years ahead or behind. (But I'm not the Bad Astronomer. I'm not any kind of astronomer. So he's probably right.)

This Slate article mentions that there's already been a few hoax videos associated with this event:

Note also lots of hoaxes are turning up, like a video of a flaming crater that's actually a flaming pit in Turlmenistan that's been burning for decades (called "The Door to Hell"). Be cautious and be skeptical.

The Guardian UK has a decent article called Meteorite explodes over Russia: key questions answered with details about what happened and how often stuff like this is likely to occur.

This should be good for several conflicting conspiracy theories that we will hear about for decades.

One thing I do find encouraging is that it looks like this was never mistaken for anything other then a meteor.

They were real fears among certain scientist, military strategists, and others during the Cold War that if a meteor strike occurred in a NATO or Eastern Bloc country it would not be difficult given the tensions and paranoia of the time to mistake it for a nuclear strike and obviously that situation could very easily go very, very, very bad.

Now maybe this particular meteor had a trajectory or an impact blast that made it easy to differentiate from a nuclear missile or maybe with the Cold War gone countries just aren't as trigger happy as they used to be or maybe the fear of a meteor strike being mistaken for a nuclear strike was never a reasonable concern, but it is somewhat reassuring that "giant explosion from the sky" doesn't automatically trigger the "Nuke the other side" response.

Or in other words... imagine this exact thing happening say....in late October of 1962.

Seriously.. A meteor shower over Russia? Hundreds, if not thousands, of very clear and steady video and images. A UFO over a major city in America? a handful of incredibly shaky video and blurry images from extremely far away.

Apparently it came from the opposite direction from DA14 - that's approaching from the direction of the South Pole and this seems to have come in from the north.

Did anybody else notice that Google had a doodle about DA14 this morning, which showed the asteroid shooting through the middle of the logo and the lower-case g having to jump out of the way? I saw that just after reading about the Russian meteorite, and thought it was rather unfortunate. Shortly afterwards they removed it...

I agree Joe. I also think its a very, very good thing it didn't hit North Korea. That could have been the tipping point that sent Kim Jong Un into full on Napoleon Syndrome Retaliation Mode.
