Baseball Babe Ruth invented the modern bat

Comment: Invention. Babe Ruth is credited with the invention of the
modern baseball bat. He was the first player to order a bat with a knob
on the end of the handle, with which he hit 29 home runs in 1919. The
famous name of that bat was Louisville Slugger, which has become
synonymous with baseball.

That sounds pretty easy to check, unless someone thinks every single photograph before Babe Ruth started playing professionally, has been photoshopped.

The Louisville Slugger has been in existence since 1884, eleven years before the Bambino was even born.

I thought this was going to be about the thinness of modern bats close to the grip. Babe Ruth didn't invent that either. I think he used a pretty heavy bat, 44 ounces IIRC. He was a strong man with that massive upper body, so swinging that heavy bat was part of his legend.

Someone, whose name I forget, played major league baseball for a total of nine or ten years, and used just one bat throughout. Completely different from today with the whiphandles that shatter sometimes on contact with a ball hit near the narrow part.

Heck, bats sometimes shatter these days when hit on the sweet spot. There's even been a few broken-bat home runs.
