“He is the most qualified candidate in either party to continue to serve the American people,” Smedile continued.

Given the droves that have fled the Republican party**, it would not surprise me that they can get united support.

**There was a panel on MSNBC a few months ago where a Republican strategist confessed (or more accurately, lamented) to the way that DJT has been able to maintain 90% approval with Republicans. The party has been losing between 1.2 and 1.5 million supporters per month since inauguration. Those that don't like him are not sticking around to fight for their party. They've abandoned the party to Trumpism.

There's always been some discussion about the actual viability of a third party, but typically, the third party efforts have grown from what might be considered the fringe elements, working to attract more of the voting populace by moving (at least nominally) in a more centrist direction.

Then came the Tea Party, followed by Trumpism, in which the fringe elements stuck to their guns (figuratively and literally) and rode a wave of disgruntled, largely poorly educated reactionary voting into the halls of power.

Now it seems as though with the lunatics running the asylum, the best hope for a viable third party is... old school conservative GOP?

I'm hoping the DNC sees all this and realizes that they can't pull the same kind of divisive, presumptive crap they did in the last presidential election cycle. There's an energized progressive wing that needs to be listened to, that seems to have their finger on the pulse of the American people (particularly the younger generations) in a way that the establishment Democrats can't seem to grasp.

If the RNC actually follows through with this, and if enough old-school conservatives mount a political resistance, it should (in theory) split the conservative vote, allowing the Democrats a clear path to victory if they don't manage to shoot themselves in the proverbial foot. Here's hoping.

Whatever his odds in the general election, the vast majority of Republicans love Trump, probably even more than Saint Reagan overall. He will sail through the primary opposed or not. A strong opponent will just waste campaign funds and hurt that opponent's career. Conventional wisdom may be that the extra mudslinging might also hurt Trump, but at this point he seems pretty immune to that aspect of a primary challenger.

The GOP has pretty much ceased to be a political party and become a doomsday cult. The trouble with doomsday cults is when they go into meltdown, their poisonous egos pretty much demands that they do everyone a favor and take them down with them.
