Icon215 Everyone mistook a priest for a KKK member

Last night around 9:15 PM, social media became a furious storm of confusion regarding a man in white robes roaming along 10th St. and purportedly armed with a whip. Students thought the white robes indicated Klu Klux Klan affiliation.

My son was about five and met a Franciscan friar in brown robes. He asked the guy if he was a ninja.

That was the first thought my wife had seeing a teen girl in a niqab running down the streets in Ottawa to catch a bus. All you could see were her eyes, and my wife thought "NINJA".

So.. was he?

The only correct answer to that is "if I were, I couldn't tell you".

Probably not...

Brown robes are for Jedi...

Black clothing that covers everything but the eyes = Ninja

The last thing a ninja would wear would be clothing that would identify them as a ninja.

Unless they know that we wouldn't expect them to wear typical ninja clothing in which case dressing like a ninja would be exactly what they would do.

I think Spanish friars wear an outfit that looks just like a KKK
outfit except the hood part is jet black in color. I remember being
shocked and disgusted at seeing it in a magazine (National Geographic IIRC)
until I read the description.

So the KKK aparently stole the design and made the uniform all white
in color.

Do he was a Jedi then. And did the Ninja and the Jedi get together and decide this.

They're Nazarenos, also called Penitentes (penitent ones). They wear tall pointed caps with hoods called capirotes as a sign of their penitence.
They come in all sorts of colours and colour combinations including all white:

a furious storm of confusion
IE: a few people misidentified the outfit of a man in a white robe, possibly based on previous experiences of actual KKK members on the site. They were considerate enough to share their concerns with the campus. Their concerns turned out to be false. Nobody got hurt and no harm was done.

Sorry, it just bugs me how the press tends to overstate fury/outrage/panic when discussing responses on a form of social media. More shares does not automatically mean more panic!
