I have never understood this thing with over-singing the US national anthem. There seems to be this attitude that is always has to be epic, and it doesn't.

The best version that I have ever heard was at a change of command ceremony. The vocalist was a friend of the outgoing commander. She stayed completely within her range and there were no vocal acrobatics whatsoever.

ETA: The OP is bad satire because the sentences actually parse. Sarah Palin is much more random.

According to this story she signed the correct lyrics.
I have not been to a professional sporting event, or even a non-professional one, in a very long time, so I didn't know that.

FWIW, if the signer is a Deaf person, offering her version of the national anthem, then she did the correct thing, but if she was actually an interpreter, she should have interpreted the flub.

Still, the Deaf people in the audience were going "Chat-chat-chat-- oh, look, someone's signing the "Star-Spangled Banner-- Chat-chat-chat."

It is my opinion that since the melody of the anthem is taken from an old drinking song, the anthem should be sung like one. If you can't sing it while swinging a mug of beer in your hand you're doing it wrong!

It should not be big or dramatic, just enthusiastic and with an honest effort to be in-key.

And which key is that, you (don't) ask? Why, Francis Scott Key, of course!

Ow.

Just for that, we're sending Sarah Palin up north to sing "O Canada" at a future major sporting event...

I didn't know it either until I started looking around and came across that story about this year's interpreter/performer and some information about past interpreters/performers.

No, it's Russia she can see from her backyard. That would make Canada the driveway.

Can we deport her to the Republic of Alaska?

I don't believe Sarah Palin would ever really make such a claim. A lot of singers have botched the national anthem over the years, and I don't recall any politician talk about deporting them.

Robert Goulet once messed up the national anthem at a boxing match. He sang, "over the land of the brave, and the home of the free," at the end where "brave" is the last word. It rythmes with "wave."

Willie Nelson once sang, "whose broad stars and bright stripes," instead of "whose broad stripes and bright stars."

And who can ever forget Roseanne's terrible, shrieking version at a San Diego Padres game in the summer of 1990!

We, seriously, then-- back to Canada for him! Maybe he wouldn't be dead if he'd gotten him some of that free health care.

But she got the words right. Where would we send her? Israel? Oh, hell. They'd probably take her. She's got "sabra" written all over her.

That's because they were all good Americans. We're talking about Christina AGUILERA here. AGUILERA!!!!!!!!

She was born in Staten Island for crying out loud!

Plus she was on the Mickey Mouse Club!

How much more un-American could she be????
