Default Federal judge refers Sheriff Joe Arpaio for criminal contempt

A federal judge said Friday that he will refer Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio to the U.S. Attorney’s Office to be charged with criminal contempt of court. The decision comes after U.S. District Judge G. Murray Snow found that Arpaio intentionally violated various orders rooted in an 8-year-old racial-profiling case.

I'd say that he's demonstrated nothing but contempt for the court.

I'd say if there was any justice, he'd be doing time in his own tent city, but it would probably be a bad thing to send a guy to a prison he used to manage.

West Virginia had a history of sheriffs becoming the defacto political kings in their counties, Here, the sheriff collects taxes as well, so the position could give some people a very good deal on their taxes.
WV put in terms limits (2 consecutive terms, period). The Sheriffs Association, still a political powerful group, has asked us to vote to change twice in the last few years. The ballot issue failed miserably. This is one office where I believe in term limits. There is an Ohio sheriff across the river who makes the news at least once a week.
Like Arpaio, he needs to go.

Ali

PS: Even the dead voters here favor term limits for sheriffs. And they seem to be a shrinking group.

Default Arizona voters oust "America's toughest sheriff" amid legal woes

An Arizona sheriff who became a national political figure by cracking down on illegal immigration and jailing inmates in tents lost Tuesday after 24 years in office, eliminating the last vestige of the state’s decade-old movement of local police confronting people in the country illegally.

There is an occasional bright spot in the sea of November gloom. I am glad to see this one.

Although it may be short-lived. Secretary of Homeland Security Joe Arpaio?

I don't see that happening. Trump is going to want a cabinet of sycophants, he won't want someone who is as much of a media sex worker as he is.

ETA: Not that my track record of predicting things regarding Trump is anything to brag about.

Yeah, but the Feds are after Arpaio. I'm not sure even Trump's gonna want some guy who's about to go on trial. Plus Arpaio is 84.

And Trump probably likes people who didn't lose their election. He probably thinks every President from Washington to Truman is a quitter or a looser. Except maybe FDR. Everyone else was either a weak body who couldn't even handle one term, a quitter, or a loser.

Whew.

I was afraid this thread had been resurrected because he'd just been named the new White House Director of Communications, or something of the sort.

Given Trump's love of the man during the campaign, it would not surprise me if the President issues a pardon for Arpaio as part of a distraction action.

It may even come before sentencing.

I doubt Arpaio will face any jail time, given his age and the potential for violence against a former LEO. But still nice to see a conviction.

That would be cruel and unusual punishment. For him and us.

I saw a comment on Facebook that said (essentially) "sometimes contempt of court is the only way to get things done" or something like that.

It surprised me not for the utterly stupid concept expressed, but because it was posted in a thread cheering the conviction, posted by a friend who is a flaming liberal. I didn't think he had any facebook friends who would defend Good Ol' Joe.

I can't speak for your friend but I number among my FB friends people who have 500, 600, 1000 friends and more. It's not possible IMO to have that many friends that you actually know, or certainly know well, so I've stopped being surprised at some of the comments I've seen from these 'friends'.

I have relatives who are FB friends who would say things like that.

ETA: I generally hide the sources (pages or people) of the more obnoxious memes they post, and in some cases (like my Trump-loving, Black Lives Matter-bashing middle brother) I've unfollowed them. But prefer not to unfriend them for a variety of reasons.
