Fright Plane skids off runway in Turkey, comes to a rest on cliff

A commercial airplane that skidded off a runway after landing in northern Turkey dangled precariously off a muddy cliff with its nose only a few feet from the sea.

There is a report that the right engine suddenly surged.

I'd like to point out that Boeing doesn't make the engines.

Jet engines have been around a long time and don't generally accelerate on their own. It seems likely that either the engine control system, or more likely, the throttles in the cockpit failed or were misoperated. The black box will know if the throttles were operated incorrectly or if the engine speed was not what the throttles and the engine control system was calling for.

Perhaps the pilots applied thrust thinking the thrust reverses were deployed?

They are deployed automatically when the thrust lever is moved to the reverse thrust position or the reverse thrust lever is used.
