Default Greatest Super Bowl Photo Ever?

http://www.thefunkyapple.com/?p=719

Heck, if you just had the two guys, it could be the cover of a sports-themed romance novel.

Yeah, I think it would be funnier cropped to remove the guy in the background ... whoever that is, presumably not Tyson Gay as I originally assumed.

Not knowing about US football I don't know what team that is, whether they really have a player called Gay, and if they've recently played the blue team.

(eta) Must be New Orleans Saints in gold versus the Indiana Colts in blue. Which makes that guy Randall Gay, Defensive Back. (Ha ha!) Ah, and they seem to have just played each other on February 7th in some kind of important game thingy. I'd have found that quicker if I'd looked at the photo caption...

Where would the funny be without the bomb? Players of all sports have been snapped in pseudo-erotic contact - the 'Gay' increases the amusement factor so as to be worthy of a chuckle, crop it and you're just left with two footballers holding each other, as they tend to...

I just thought it was ramming the point home too hard. As it were.

And it's funny without having the word "Gay" in the background, right? Because people get the point anyway...

Wrong. I must disagree with you and side with rockstar1976. That is what makes the photo funny in the first place.

Re to OP: If you removed Mr Gay then I'd assume that the player on the left is trying to communicate something to the player on the right over the din of an over enthusiastic crowd.

And I'm pretty sure that's not Tyson Gay, what with him being a sprinter and all

Maybe President Obama should use that method when trying to communicate over the din of an airport, I'm sure it would cause less fuss than him appearing to bow.

Yeah, on the other hand, it's part of the candidness of the photo that makes it... interesting. And I officially register my disapproval of cutting any Saints player out of any photo just on general (rabid fan) principle.

I'd say without the "GAY", it would still be an interesting photo, but not funny. I just don't find men hugging to be rare enough to see anything out of the ordinary, even in sports. But the way the photo is taken, it looks like the jersey is making a comment on the huggers. It reminds me of one time when I was in a bookstore, and I wasn't watching where I was going. I walked right into one of those promotional book racks. I looked up, and the first thing I saw was a big red sign that said "Klutz." When I hear the jersey call them gay, it's in the same mental voice as the book rack calling me a klutz.

It's the Saints' cornerback, Randall Gay.

Mr. Gay (or someone wearing his jersey) was just joked about on "The Jay Leno Show". Jay sent Ross (his outrageously gay intern) to the Super Bowl. Ross saw the 'gay' jersey and started to approach the person, then turned back and said "I can't!" :-P

I vaguely remember an issue back when Gay was on the Patriots. After they made it to the Super Bowl, people from his hometown were trying to order custom jerseys with his name on it. But the NFL website blocks out certain words that you can't put on custom jerseys, and it wouldn't let anyone make a jersey with his name on it even though he was an actual player.

(The website also blocked people from getting "Ron Mexico" jerseys; apparently enough people tried that they felt it became an issue.)

Reminds me of something my mother did once. She was a highschool math teacher and would not pass the football players unless they actually did the work. One day in a faculty meeting one of the coaches loomed over her and asked what she had against football. Her response was "Well, I think it promotes homosexuality what with all that patting each other on the butt." Exit one embarressed coach.

And by the way, she does not believe that statement.

Yeah, the picture is really funny - and I agree with the majority, removing Randall Gay from the pic would take the fun factor out of it, would just be two football players hugging or communicating. By the way, Super Bowl XLIV was really great, in my opinion of the best SB games in the last few years. The pic of Rooney and Ronaldo is funny, too, love the gay allusions to Ronaldo, I just can't stand this guy although he is a talented soccer player.
