Icon102 Obama art on Seinfeld

Comment: Can you identify the poster in in the upper left hand corner in this scene from Seinfeld…it is hanging in his apartment for a couple seasons I think (famous "Bookman" scene) and there are some rumors that its Barrack Obama…but it does not appear so to me...

I believe it is baseball related-you see a few baseball posters in both George and Jerry's apartments.

That One is very powerful, isn't he? Nobody even knew what "in the tank" meant then, but obviously, Jerry was in it.

And here he is, not showing his face.

Here is another; the face is showing, but still hard to see who it is.

It reminds me a bit of some images I've seen of Jackie Robinson:

but the uniform color scheme is wrong and the facial features aren't quite right.

ETA: The cap (if that's what it is) makes it appear to be a caricature of a vintage White Sox player, but it's tough to tell from the pic in the O.P.

I kept thinking it looked a bit like Satchel Paige, but a quick search round the net doesn't give me any similar posters of Paige.

I thought the same thing - there are photos/paintings of Paige with a similar hat, but his face is much narrower and I couldn't find any smiling pictures. I'm wondering whether the player is meant to be African-American at all, or whether that's just our perception based on the fuzzy resolution and the stylized color scheme of the poster.

Looks like a movie poster, or maybe a show--vaudeville?

There appear to be two dancing girls on the sides, facing away from the middle. Some writing at the top, and perhaps a title at the bottom.

My first thought was, given the way that what looks like a baseball diamond seems to transform into palm trees at the top of the poster, the subject is Caribbean. That being said, the two most prominent Caribbean Negro League players I could think of are Martin Dihigo and Minnie Minoso (both, I think, from Cuba) and this guy looks like neither of them.

I am voting for clear evidence that Obama is from Kenya.

My first thought was "Jazz musician in a beret". I blew up the photo as well as I could and tried to lighten the painting better. Turns out it's a beret and he's holding a saxaphone while sitting. (Or a baseball player holding a sax. I'm up for other options, as I don't know squat about baseball or jazz.)

Incidentally, the word "jazz" was originally baseball slang. Not that that has anything to do with anything.

It definitely looks like he's wearing a white beret, though I'm not so sure about the saxophone. I've been searching for well-known men of color who were known to wear white or pale berets. I've found jazzman Slim Gaillard, who frequently wore a "rakish white beret." Unfortunately, his face doesn't (to me) look like one in the artwork.

Some good detective work so far...

My first impression was of Harry Belafonte, because I got a definite Caribbean feel from the poster.

Can't find any similar posters of him though. Who else sang songs in the style of "The Banana Boat Song"?

A list of Seinfeld's set decorators can be found here:

Anyone want to know badly enough to attempt contact?

I don't think that's the case. IIRC from my music history classes it's from the Creole word "jas", which means "sex". Jazz was born in what were essentially whorehouses in the New Orleans red light district, Storyville. When the US Navy closed down this area during World War I, a lot of the musicians who played in the jazzhouses moved to Kansas City and then Chicago, changed the time signatures used from 2/4 to 4/4, replaced the tuba player with a string bass, and jazz the musical style was born.

In case anyone is still interested, I stumbled across this link and recalled this thread from a while back. The picture is a little less than two thirds of the way down (sorry but I couldn't figure out how to embed it).

Good find! So, it's a "Memphis Chicks" poster. Knowing that, I was able to find a couple decently clear pictures of the poster in situ on Seinfeld:
