In keeping with the trend of most remakes, is this one going to be darker and edgier?

It's been ages since I read the novel (I think I was in middle or high school) - was the cult-like element (the masks, the drums, the "ceremony" of it) original to the novel? I don't remember it as being a "creepy kids" story, more of a "magical/weird place in an otherwise normal setting" story, but I just may have missed some of those elements when I read it back then. (This looks almost like a mashup of Pet Sematary and Children of the Corn.) Still looks like it could be really good, and for all I know it may be a faithful adaptation of a novel that I'm just misremembering after thirty years.

ETA: GenYus, I don't know how much darker and edgier it can be than the protagonist's four-year old son dying and being brought back as an evil monster...

I do not recall the cult-like elements in either the novel or the original movie.

ETA: There was a Native American angle to the original story which might have been replaced though.

Dear Hollywood,

The next time you want to breathe new life into a long-dead franchise, remember: sometimes, dead is better.

PS: I’m glad John Lithgow is still with us, though.
